My artistic practice focuses on photography and new media. My background is in Secondary Art teaching and I have also undertaken many successful commissions over the past few years. I have recently returned to education to revisit and rediscover my creative practice.I am currently studying part time for an MA in Contemporary Fine Art: Curating at Sheffield Hallam University 2006 - 2009. As part of this I have been involved with Sheffield Hallam Curators Forum (SHCF) and have had a number of exhibitions in the Site Gallery, One Night Stands #1 - Wimbledon College of Art (UAL) and at the End Gallery, Sheffield. I have teamed up with Diana Ali (fellow artist and curator), Anna Smith (Communications Officer), Charlie MacDonald (Episode Management), Lisa McCastkill (Communications Officer) and Sean Simmonds (Graphic Designer) to form 'Up & Coming' at Novas Contemporary Urban Centre, Liverpool in July 2008. This is to be initiated under the Crawley & Ali umbrella. At present I am working with the notion of the 'Passport Image' and how the UK Passport Office rejects at least 20% of all photographs. My project is entitled 'Photo Booth 2008' and my intention is for as many participants to be filmed whilst being photographed in a passport style and self-certify their images using my version the passport application. This has been sponsored by Severn Trent Searches in terms of photographic work.Forthcoming exhibitionsThursday 3rd July 2008 - Friday 18th July 2008'Up and Coming' CUC North West, LiverpoolGroup show with 35 selected artists from final year BA, current MA, recently graduated and early career artist. This is curated and organised by David Thomas Crawley & Diana Ali I am currently studying part time for a MA Contemporary Fine Art: Curating at Sheffield Hallam University. I completed my BA (Hons) Fine Art degree at SHU in 2001 and upon returning to Liverpool attained my PGCE Secondary Art and Design at LJMU in 2003. I am currently living in Nottingham with my partner where I am working as a freelance artist and towards future MA exhibitions.I worked as a Secondary Art and Design teacher for many years and always cultivated ideas with the students I taught. My interest in photography and new media continues to grow and I feel that the MA has helped me in revisiting and rediscovering my own creative practice. I love to meet new people and see this as the basis for all my work, whether this be as a performative piece such as my video work or as a way of initiating a conversation between strangers. I believe that the photographer and the sitter have to feel at ease with one another in order for there to be a visual response. I have developed this understanding through club photography and working with many bands. I have been commissioned by Liverpool Biennial to work on projects with students and community groups. These projects have been 'Lighten Up, STAR*, gossip and at a glance’.Permanent paintings are held at Holly Lodge Girls College and West Derby School, Liverpool and photographs purchased by Liverpool Housing Action Trust.Education2006 - 2009Sheffield Hallam University - MA Contemporary Fine Art - Curating2002 - 2003Liverpool John Moores University – PGCE Secondary/Post 16 Art and Design with QTS1998 – 2001Sheffield Hallam University – BA(Hons) Fine ArtGroup Exhibitions2008 - Forthcoming'Up & Coming' - Crawley & AliCUC North West, LiverpoolThis show will showcase up and coming talent curated by myself and co-curator/artist - Diana Aliwww.crawleyali.blogspot.com2008'defamiliarization' – SHCF held at End Gallery, Sheffield Hallam University, Sheffield‘One Night Stand’ – SHCF held at The Gallery, Wimbledon College of Art, London (alongside Andy Roe)‘Freedonia’ – SHCF held at Site Gallery, Sheffield (alongside Katy Woods)2001‘Aspiring Artists’ Degree Show, Pslalter Lane, Sheffield Hallam University2000'Halo' SheffieldSolo Exhibitions2002Liverpool Biennial Independents – John Lewis, LiverpoolFree Love - Domino Gallery, LiverpoolPublications2002‘Inside Housing’ magazine published 25th October 2002 pp.2-3‘Lighten Up!’ brochure published by LHAT, Chrysalis Arts and Liverpool Biennial2001‘Aspiring Artists’ Degree Show catalogue published via Sheffield Hallam UniversityCommissions2006 Walton Youth Project, Liverpool – Project Manager and lead Artist2005 Princess Primary School, Liverpool – Project Manager and lead Artist2004 Liverpool Biennial - ‘Gossip’ magazine – Project Manager and Editor Liverpool Biennial - ‘at a glance’ teacher resource pack - Project Manager and EditorNo 52 Lark Lane, Liverpool – Private collection
